What if you could do it all over again?

Jennifer Wright is pretty sure her husband doesn’t love her anymore. She and Max used to be the perfect couple, but the pressures of work and kids have pulled them in opposite directions. Now , Jen is full of “what if” questions about whether her bland, suburban existence is all she was ever destined for.

When a terrible accident sends Jen into a coma, she is able to see what her life could have been if she had run off to Australia with the handsome, dangerous man she met on vacation, or if she had stayed with her workaholic college boyfriend. Would she ever have loved another child as much as she loves her daughters? Could she have become rich? More than anything, Jen wants to do the right thing for her family. But what she discovers may leave her with even more questions about the choices she made, and no easy answers about what to do next.

Have you ever wondered what it would’ve been like if you pursued a different path? Or perhaps married an ex instead of the one you’re with? This is basically what IF YOU’RE NOT THE ONE by Jemma Forte explored in this novel.
The heroine, Jennifer Wright, is unhappy with her marriage. Her husband, Max, hasn’t been paying much attention to her, they haven’t had sex in five months, and its that craving for intimacy that had Jennifer desperate and completely unsatisfied. Then one night, just when she thought she’ll finally end her dry spell, she caught her husband flirting with a coworker over the phone. The same woman Jen’s entertained at her house a couple of times. Distraught, Jen ran out of the house and got hit by a car then went on a coma for three weeks during which time she had The Family Man moment. Jen went through “tunnels” and “lived” three different versions of HEA with her exes, one was surfer dude Aiden, then there’s billionaire Tim (a la Mark Zuckerburg), and then Steven, the plumber turned home TV shopping superstar.
I have to admit, I’ve been in Jennifer’s shoes so it was quite easy for me to step in and see things from her prerogative. IF YOU’RE NOT THE ONE was told in flash-forward style with the alternative HEA’s interspersed in between. I was enjoying Jen’s voice and how unfiltered she was describing her life and it’s quite obvious she lived before settling down with Max.
I don’t know where it started feeling monotonous for me though. I just started noticing how Jen is always irritated, whether it’s with her friend borrowing her dress, or how her current beau is behaving, it’s like she’s constantly PMS-ing. And this dissatisfaction extended to the alternative HEA’s, except for one but even that felt more like “settling” than authentically joyous. I’m usually left with feel-good vibes after reading women’s fiction, but IF YOU’RE THE ONE left me feeling sad and even irritated. Jennifer rubbed off on me!
Now I hope this gets a companion novel or something because the novel feels incomplete. After a miraculous recovery from her accident, Jen’s marriage is still in shambles and it didn’t remedy the situation with Max. It did the opposite and it looks like Jen is about to make one of her alternative HEA come true. Now women’s lit is notorious for leaving its readers on a lurch, like the writers usually leaves it to us to make up our own ending. This time around I wish we had more closure because towards the end, IF YOU’RE THE ONE took a slight turn towards magic realism territory and I’d like to know where that road ends.

Talk Supe

Suped Feature: Friends to Lovers Trope feat. Bec McMaster, Susanna Ives, Kristen Callihan, and Sara Humphreys

Friends to lovers. Possibly one of the most favored and popular trope in romance novels. There’s just something so sexy and exciting about a relationship that starts with bickering, dangerous plotting, and hateful thoughts concerning the other party. It’s a different, and definitely a dysfunctional foreplay, that almost never fails.

I love this trope! After all, the Bible says “Love thy enemy,” and if my nemesis is like these four hunky males, I wouldn’t mind turning the other cheek (and more) to them.

It’s a fine line between love and hate, and these heroes know that first hand! Here to tell us the signs that you may be falling from your enemy are Leo Barrons (Of Silk and Steam by Bec McMaster), Lord Randall (Wicked, My Love by Susanna Ives), Adam, King of the GIM (Soulbound by Kristen Callihan), and Killian Bane (Vampires Never Cry Wolf by Sara Humphreys).

Leo Barrons, Of Silk and Steam:

  1. You find yourself looking forward to matching wits with her, even when she comes out the victor.
  2. You make rash challenges, like promising to help her outrun assassins, in exchange for a single kiss…
  3. You trust her with information that could ruin you, knowing it’s the only way to get past her quest for revenge against your family.
*I do love the part where you tricked Mina in showing you her boobies*

Lord Randall, Wicked, My Love:

  1. You want to be with your enemy all the time, even if you’re just going to bicker and insult each other.
  2. You get confused as to whether you’re fighting or flirting.
  3. Things turn ugly and you turn to your enemy because you know she’s there, your enemy in thick and thin.
*Tsk, hanging out to bicker? Sounds like foreplay to me*

Adam, King of the GIM Soulbound:

  1. Certainly you want to tup her. But when you imagine holding her after you tup? Trouble, my friends. Trouble.
  2. Even when she annoys that bloody hell out of you, she’s the only person you want to be around. Irritating, that.
  3. When it is foregone conclusion that you will lay down your life for her.

*Oh yeah, I remember how you’d bait Eliza in the dungeons just so she’d stick around and talk to you*

Killian Bane, Vampires Never Cry Wolf:

  1. I couldn’t stay away from her. No matter what I did or what I said, I was drawn to Sadie and I kept going back to her damn club night after night. I couldn’t get enough of her and I never will.
  2. I walked away from my duty as crown prince. No title and no amount of power could possibly replace having Sadie by my side.
  3. I knew I was done for when I realized that I’d rather fight with Sadie than make love with anyone else.

*Giving up your crown? Now THAT is a sacrifice!*

Boob Tube Binges: Snowed In

We’re snowed in, and with my desktop down, and Direct TV being intermittent, I only have Netflix and Redbox to provide an alternative to reading

THE PARADISE | 16 ep | 50 min/ep | Netflix
The gist is, a bright-eyed shopgirl, Denise, fell in love with the sexy department store owner and widower, Murray. Throw in ex girlfriends, a snotty heiress, colorful cast of characters whose side stories are just entertaining, and you have a delightful British period drama.
Denise is such a fantastic lead! She’s ambitious but still on the naive side. Her creativity and passion is what gets her in trouble all the time. Some people see her as a threat, while others are down right jealous. What I love about her is her steadfast attitude and unconditional loyalty to her boss-turned-boyfriend, Murray. Not to mention her ideas really
Made The Paradise a LOT of money.
Murray is absolutely, positively, delectable! A widower who is just as ambitious as Denise, he changed the retail game when he built Paradise. This man set my knickers on fire! He was, at first, emotionally unavailable and haunted by the death of his first wife. But his walls eventually crumbled, thanks to Denise. There were a lot of things and people that came between them and boy did Murray fight for Denise! Oh lord it was swoontastic and über sexy!
I love this series with its “office” politics, class issues, and other odds and ends. The only setback is its already cancelled and the ending is open ended.
STONEHEARST ASYLUM | 1hr 52min | Netflix
Based on Edgar Allan Poe’s The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether, Stonehearst Asylum is insane! At the heart of the story is Eliza Graves (Kate Beckinsale) who was committed because she has hysteria. Enter a young psychiatrist Dr. Edward Newman (Jim Sturgess) who became completely fascinated and invested in Eliza. Turns out they met previously and Newgate made it his mission to free her since.

The theme and feel of this movie is dark. I love the setting and costume, not to mention the crazy twist they added to the tale. This dark romance has an HEA, but it’s one of those mind-fuck endings that you may or may not find disturbing. Me? I LOVED IT!
BELLE | 1hr 45min | Redbox & HBO
I’ve been wanting to watch Belle since I featured it in one of my BB&B’s a while back. And my gut was right on the money because this movie was marvelous!
Based on a true story, Belle is a story about a mulatto girl who’s skin color and heritage dictated her place in society. Belle aka Dido, was deemed above servants but below her white relatives and counterparts. The dinner rituals alone is proof of her ambiguous place in English society.
This movie had me gritting my teeth thanks to the bigotry; giddy thanks to Dido’s love life; invested because of the race issue; and empowered because of Dido’s courage to be part of a change. It’s sad that such prejudice still exists today which makes this “historical” movie still relevant today.
Belle is one powerful story that is very relatable until today. The focal point isn’t just about race issues, but the value of life itself. Don’t be mistaken by the girly poster, this movie is NOT a chick-flick. It’s a human interest movie filled with political, societal issued with generous helpings of familial and romantic love. Must watch!!

Steampunk Sundays: The Diabolical Miss Hyde by Viola Carr

Series: Electric Empire 1

Format: eGalley

Publisher: Harper Voyager
Source: Publisher via Edelweiss
Genre: Adult Steampunk

Magic, mystery, and romance mix in this edgy retelling of the classic The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde–in which Dr. Eliza Jekyll is the daughter of the infamous Henry

In an electric-powered Victorian London, Dr. Eliza Jekyll is a crime scene investigator, hunting killers with inventive new technological gadgets. Now, a new killer is splattering London with blood, drugging beautiful women and slicing off their limbs. Catching “the Chopper” could make Eliza’s career—or get her burned. Because Eliza has a dark secret. A seductive second self, set free by her father’s forbidden magical elixir: wild, impulsive Lizzie Hyde.

When the Royal Society sends their enforcer, the mercurial Captain Lafayette, to prove she’s a sorceress, Eliza must resist the elixir with all her power. But as the Chopper case draws her into London’s luminous, magical underworld, Eliza will need all the help she can get. Even if it means getting close to Lafayette, who harbors an evil curse of his own.

Even if it means risking everything and setting vengeful Lizzie free

3.5 Cauldrons

THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE by Viola Carr, is the first book in a brand new series called, Electric Empire, and it’s Gothic Steampunk! Not only do you have a Jekyll/Hyde adaptation, but Dr. Frankenstein’s legacy is also present as well as peppering of fey, alchemy, and lycanthrope to boot. This book is pure madness! I don’t think I’ve ever come across a lot of cray-crays in one tome, and I absolutely loved it!
So Dr. Eliza Jekyll, as you probably assume, is the daughter of The Dr. Jekyll, and apparently she inherited her father’s “condition”, and Eliza is trying in earnest to control her strange affliction with a serum of some sort. During the day, Eliza plays the doctor, helping the Royal Society investigate a series of murders. At night, Lizzie Hyde comes out to play, prowling the dank streets and pubs of London, acting like a vigilante of some sort. But is this all Lizzie’s doing at night or is she the one responsible for all the killings? Eliza can’t answer for certain because once Lizzie’s back in the shadows, Eliza barely remembers what her other half has done the night before.
I love not only the plot but how THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE was told. The setting is very gritty, the people Eliza finds herself in company with, thanks to her work, are the scum of London. There’s nothing comely or even harmless about them. Everyone looks suspicious, a lot of them looks like they’re guilty of something. Very foreboding and exciting at the same time. Like part of me is thinking that something or someone is lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to jump Eliza/Lizzie. There is this one scene where Eliza went to this club, it’s like a members-only place, and to me, that scene is the epitome of this book’s madness! That chapter illustrates how insane this series is going to be and I cannot wait to read more of Eliza/Lizzie’s story.
THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE was told in a very interesting way as well. It shifts from the 3rd person POV to Lizzie’s voice when Eliza has a hold of their body. I love Lizzie’s musings, VCarr successfully contrasted how different Eliza is from her alter-ego in these moments, it’s very much like the two are different characters. It’s very night and day and the concept about split personality is well fleshed out and wonderfully executed. Now there are some parts in the middle that were slow, I had to put the book down for a day, but it picked up again on the last quarter. The murder mystery was a good twist too! The conflict-resolution was charged with adrenalin and the ending provided a good hook, designed to have you waiting for the next book and following the series.

Merry Christmas! Maligayang Pasko!

Christmas is my favorite time of the year and whether or not you celebrate this season like me, I hope that this month has been nothing but wonderful for you.

I had the pleasure of watching Kelly Clarkson’s Christmas concert, Miracle on Broadway, here in Nashville last weekend and it was such a fun show. My phone sucks so I wasn’t able to take decent videos but here are a couple of my favorite songs which I hope will further brighten an already exciting day.
P.S. I know this post/greeting is late, I blame it on too much food (as always) and The Hobbit marathon. Have you seen the last one? How was it?

Introducing, Melissa & Sarez

How was y’all’s weekend?!

Mine was busy and super fun as I had a big group of friends and family that came to town for an annual event. Lots of booze, food, reminiscing, and laughs were involved hence my MIA status.

Sorry if there was no BB&B this weekend, I decided to take a little break from blogging, do a mini reboot but I promise things are going back to normal starting today.

Which brings me to the purpose of this post. So I posted a help wanted ad last week and I finally found new friends who are willing and excited to review with me!

All things Sarez!

I am a busy mum to five kids and almost permanently have my head stuck in a book. Reading while managing the kids and a busy household is my superpower.

I have a passion for words and will read anything I can get my hands on and completely agree that ebooks are the greatest creation ever! I love holding a book in my hands but the ability to one click has put my reading obsession into overdrive.

I read across many genres but my among my favorite titles you will find contemporary romance, erotic fiction (although I need a good storyline to keep me going), new adult, young adult, historical fiction, paranormal and supernatural, and urban fantasy. I haven’t gone as far as aliens or zombies but I am learning to never say never.

What are my top three author/series/book picks.

Kristen Ashley: This woman is a phenomenal author and covers so many genres. I so far am yet to discover a book of hers that I haven’t enjoyed. My favourite from all of her works would be her Fantasyland series. These books include everything; witches, dragons, modern day characters in worlds that are entirely different from our own, almost as though they are from a past time. Her words are simple yet captivating and a go to author for me.

Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon: Diana’s book are rich with historical detail and she has based much of her stories around actual events and people. I love that it encompasses everything I love to read with its depth of history, time travel, loch ness monsters, magic and a romance that spans 200 years, two lifetimes and great sacrifice, plus it has men in kilts and Diana writes so that I can hear the Scottish accent which only makes the books more endearing. She wrote in such a beautiful way that I fell in love with Scotland and her characters and I am constantly rereading all the books but most especially the first one.

Kresley Cole – Immortals after Dark: Valkyries, werewolves, fae, demons, sorcerers and vampires. There are currently fourteen titles in this series and I love them all. The way all the stories and the characters interconnect is incredible and there is so much going on in the background. If I had to say anything about these books it’s that I wish I could unread them just to experience the joy in reading them again for the first time.

I can’t finish the list of my top picks without including a special mention for Pepper Winters. This woman has such a way with words that even though she writes dark romance there is something beautiful about her books. Even the most unreedemable becomes redeemable once she works her magic. She tortures her characters as well as her readers byt will always give you a HEA that suits the book and the characters. Sure I need a dose of fluffy and sweet once I am finished but her characters stick with me long after the last page has been turned. Not only that she is one of the most humble people I have met and is a beautiful soul. She is a constant inspiration to me.

The last McKay standing is knocked to his knees…
Three years ago, Dalton McKay looked across the altar and saw the woman he knew he’d love for the rest of his life…only it wasn’t his bride. That’s when he took the McKays’ love-’em-and-leave-’em reputation to new heights—fleeing the ceremony and Wyoming.
Now a family issue has brought Dalton back to Sundance, giving him a chance to prove to everyone—especially the woman he thought he lost—that he’s a changed man.
Aurora “Rory” Wetzler has fallen for cowboy hottie Dalton’s smooth-talkin’ ways too many times. So he’s determined to convince her he’s playing for keeps this go around? Fine. She’ll call that bluff—she can’t ignore their intense chemistry or resist smokin’ hot sex, but she’s not willing to gamble her heart again.
Dalton has plenty of fences to mend with the McKays, but his biggest fear is that Rory doesn’t believe they have a future. He’ll have to pull out all the stops to show her they belong together for the long haul.
Warning: Contains a sexy cowboy who tames his sassy lady love with his romantic and his kinky side. In explicit detail.

When I’m not squirreled away behind my laptop writing fun, sexy, contemporary erotic romances set in the modern day Wild West, I can be found reading everything under the sun, practicing yoga until I’m a pretzel, shootin’ my .22, watching the Professional Bull Riders tour on Versus, and running a kid’s taxi service, all in the guise of avoiding housework and rustling’ up vittles.
Why do I have a particular fondness for all things western? Well, I’m a fourth generation South Dakotan, living in the Black Hills, which is chock-full of interesting characters, including cowboys, Indians, ranchers, and bikers. The geographical diversity of the surrounding area showcases mountains, plains, and badlands. Living in and writing about rural settings gives me a unique perspective, especially since I’m not writing historical westerns. Through my fictional world, I can show the ideals and the cowboy way of life are still very much alive.

Cover Reveal: This is Forever by S.A. Price

Did it get you curious?

Winter is the very sexy bassist for the band 13 Shades of Red, and his book, THIS IS FOREVER will be releasing December 2013.

Wanna see the cover?
Now isn’t that just sexy? From now till December if you check out some of your favorite blogs that are rocking the mini graphic on the side column, we will be giving some teasers, excerpts and interviews about the book, on the 10th of the month.

Believe me; it really is going to be a Long Hard Winter. *wink*

And now… for a sexy sneak peek at THIS IS FOREVER…(Does contain strong language)

Seeing Lola after eight months was a fucking kick in the teeth. She had changed her hair, it was purple with black streaks, and she was wearing one fucker of an outfit. Platform Mary Jane’s, her signature, purple torn fishnet thigh highs with garters that ended in bows with skulls on them, micro mini in black satin with a lace trim. She had tripled up on her belts, her little baby tee molding to her torso like a second skin. It was razor cut in places, showing skin and the purple of her lace bra. Her arms warmers were knitted with little skulls on them. He was pretty sure she wasn’t wearing underwear also, the girl just loved to shock. Dare he think it was for his benefit? He wasn’t sure he even saw her, thinking he was dreaming the perfection before him.

But dreams don’t blow you off… at least his didn’t. His dreams, her especially, blew him. When dreams blew you off, those were called nightmares, and those sucked. Sucked like life was sucking right now. She had walked in with the rest of her band, greeted everyone but him, her gaze lingering a little too long on Colin, Rhys’ little brother, but then moved on as she kissed cheeks and hugged people.

He had to adjust his groin, discreetly of course, when she and Saffron hugged and snuggled. Apparently over the past several months Saffron and Lola had become quite the BFF, with Lola staying at Saffron’s place in New York when she had to go in for several shoots and meetings with her record company. Rhys had teased him about getting face timed and seeing both of them in little booty shorts and white tank tops… but he didn’t think they were that close.

And worse, he didn’t think seeing her all snuggly with Saffron would illicit the images rolling through his head. Not that Saffron wasn’t hot, but he just didn’t dig his best friend’s girl like that.  He grabbed a tootsie pop and unwrapped it, sticking the thick ball into his mouth. He watched her move from person to person, but never to him.

What. The. Fuck.

When everyone sat down, she sat at the other end, didn’t even bother to look at him. He went through dinner in a blur, his anger getting to him more and more. What the fuck was going on? He was beginning to feel like he was invisible. Maybe it was a nightmare?

When she got up and went to the bathroom, he followed, after exchanging a meaningful look with Rhys.

“So you’re just not going to say anything to me?” he said as he caught her coming out of the bathroom.

She looked at him and then sighed. “I didn’t want a public thing to happen.”

Public thing?

She looked him up and down. “I don’t know if I’m ready to say hi like I want to.”

Winter rolled his eyes. “So you can wrap yourself around Saffron, eye Colin up like he’s a steak, which by the way he’s not even eighteen yet, eww,” he ticked off on his fingers, “Yet you can’t even just turn and wave at me?”

Lola shook her head. “It’s not what I wanted. And Colin is going to be very popular…”

“You just didn’t wanna talk to me at all?” he asked, thoroughly confused. She was the one that pushed for the tour, and by all accounts she didn’t have issue with their past. It was what gave him hope.

She moved closer and shook her head. “That’s not it.”

“Then what’s it?” he bit out, his hands clenched at his sides. Gods, only she could infuriate him like this. Fuck she smelled good. All honey and warm clover… no one smelled like Lola.

Her voice lowered. “Do you like my outfit Winter?”

He growled. Fuck yes he liked her outfit. Loved. Wanted it crumpled on the floor of his bedroom. Wanted to peel it from her slowly, kissing every inch of skin he exposed.

She reached for him, her fingers tugging him closer by the belt loops of his jeans. “Good. You’re supposed to. You don’t get anything from me Winter Tulane. No greeting, no, little wave, no explanation. Eat your heart out baby.”

She got closer, her lips just against his, a slight almost imperceptible move of the hoop through the middle of his lip and then she was gone, back towards the party, her ass shaking with a sashay that had blood rushing from every place in his body to his cock. Fuck. What the hell was going on?

“Hey Lo,” he called after her. She gave him the finger and kept walking.

Game on. Game fucking on, he thought as he followed her back into the room. Confusion didn’t even convey how he was feeling about what happened, but holy fuck the signals she was throwing off were so convoluted he didn’t know if he should fist pump for getting her so close to him or brood over her words.
