Boob Tube Binges: When Calls The Heart, Grace + Frankie, Bonus Blogger Angst

Hey there, Supies!

Sorry I’ve been MIA for a while now. Aside from the holiday weekend, I also experienced colossal technical difficulties! If you remember, my wireless adapter died a few months back and I haven’t had the chance to resolve that issue. Then around Sunday, my laptop’s battery started acting up as well. Grr!
And as if that wasn’t enough, my Kindle Fire DIED! It won’t turn on at all! And it was with a heavy heart that I sent it to gadget heaven.
I was devastated and extremely angry over these turn of events not to mention the couple of books I’ve read in the previous days were dead as well. I’ll get to that tomorrow.
So what’s a bored girl to do? Why watch Netflix of course! So here are the two shows I binged on during my mourning.
Netflix Original Series | Comedy | 13 Episodes | 25 mins.
Tomlin and Fonda are geriatric magic! Am I allowed to say that? Let me preface it by saying that these two are certified GILF’s! I can only hope I look half as good as these screen legends when I’m in my 70’s.
So the premise of Grace (Jane Fonda) & Frankie (Lily Tomlin) is this: these two are rivals and complete opposites in terms of their personalities. Their husbands (Martin Sheen & Sam Waterston) have been law partners for 20 years or so and after two decades, they came out of the closet and told their respective wives that they’re in love and planned on getting married now that they can.
So how do these two ladies deal with the devastation of being divorced in their 70’s as their husbands openly flaunt their relationship? With much gumption, sense of humor, and pizazz! I found myself laughing so hard over the 13-25 min. episodes because Tomlin and Fonda are pure comedy gold together! The roles are made for these two, with Fonda as the uptight elitist snob, while Tomlin is the hippy, YOLO granny. There’s also a lot of heartfelt, super touching moments to balance off the funnies. I promise you’ll be hooked after watching the first episode.
Hallmark Channel | Drama | Season 1 | 43 mins.
Westerns are really growing on me! I love the frontier setting, the costumes, the small-town scope of the plots, the colorful characters, everything!
When Calls the Heart, based on Janette Oke’s Canadian West book series, is a story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young school teacher from a wealthy family back east, who moved to the west in a small coal mining town called Coal Valley. Soon enough, Elizabeth finds herself getting very invested in her student’s education, very involved in the town’s events, and crushing hard on a dreamy Mountie, Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing).
When Calls the Heart was very likable and swoony! For a small town, Coal Valley is abundant with stories that are usually family related. On top of the domestic issues, there’s also a series arc pertaining 47 dead miners who perished in a “freak accident”. After investigation, it seems the company is responsible for it and by season finale, the town is split and the leads at the helm of the issue.
My favorite part is the courtship between Elizabeth and Jack. It’s very old school in that the men and women are proper, flirtatious without crossing the lines of sexy, and rife with romantic tension. The romantic development between Elizabeth and Jack took almost the entire season that when they finally shared their first kiss, I was screaming like a crazy 15yo into a blanket! OMG! The feels! Squee!!!
Season 2 priemered last monh and I am anxious to look it up on On Demand so I’m caught up with the episodes.

  1. My goodness – what a horrible nightmare and understand your frustration. Hope things are improving. I've not heard of this series, but I am a fan of Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. I still have Jane's exercise vhs tapes from back in the day! (lol) Definitely want to check this out. I didn't see all the episodes of When Calls the Heart from 2014, but I've been watching it this year and really enjoy it. Glad you're back! Hugs…

  2. Both my kindle fire and my son's recently died withing a couple weeks of each other, so I had to get a new one. Sucks the batteries aren't replaceable. I've seen Grace and Frankie being pushed lately, so I might have to check that one out soon.

  3. My poor darling you're really not lucky this time… but at last I've added the first TV show to try it. LOL thanks to you I discovered Miss Fisher so maybe another one now!

  4. I'm so glad you reviewed these! I think I'll like both of these but Grace and Frankie is one I started and then stopped cause I thought my husband wouldn't like it. I'm going to give it another try. If it's funny than he'll watch it. The first part seemed more drama but I'm guessing that bit passes quickly.
My mom loved the Janette Oke books and I read a few as a kid/teen just cause they were there.

  5. Sounds frustarting to have all those technical failures in a row. And I am sorry to hear about your kindle, I hope you were able to get a new one. It's good to take a break from reading now and then and watching netflix sounds like a good solution. I am not much of a movie watcher myself, although I enjoy watching a movie or tv series now and then. I am currently watching Star Wars Clone Wars with my boyfriend.
Grace and Frankie sounds like a fun and heartfelt series!
And I love slow building romances, it's always awesome when they finally reach that point of the first kiss!

  6. Welcome back, Braine! :)) Wow, you really have had a bad week, poor you *reaches for a hug* I also noticed that when disaster strikes it's never just on one front! At least you had some time to watch TV 🙂 I've heard good things about Grace & Frankie… So glad you're back!!!

  7. Holy cow. Braine I would be having a bit of a fit over all that. Thankfully my gadgets have all kept going but I am having just the worst book slump ever. Have had more DNF-1-and 2 star books in the last 2 1/2 weeks than I usually do in 10 months. It's crazy. Hope the gadgety world starts being nicer to you!

  8. My son and nephew love Clone Wars!

Yeah, taking a break from reading and blogging was good. Although when I got back online, I was bogged down with all the catching up I had to do!

  9. I feel your pain, Anna! This week's been… challenging… to say the least, for me on the blogging front. I hope our reading experience next week is better.

  10. I hope all your technical difficulties are in the past now, Braine. It sucks when everything falls apart at the same time. One of my older kindles died on me, too, and I was very sad about it. I hope you've been able to figure out the books you read on the fire, and keep the highlights you had made!

  11. I'm planning on watching Grace and Frankie soon. Netflix shows are coming out of the wood works and they are mostly amazing. Have you seen the trailer for the one coming out June 5th called Sense 8? It looks amazing.
I might try to watch When Calls the Heart. I watch Hallmark so I've been seeing the commercial a lot lately.
